Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Uhhhhh….nagging wrist pain.  It aches all night, your wrists are sore and when you type or write it gets worse! What is going on?  My friend…you may have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!  Carpal Tunnel syndrome (CTS) in which the “tunnel” that the tendons, nerves, arteries, and veins travel through become compressed underneath the the ligament the covers the tunnel known as the Transverse Carpal Ligament.

Unknown-1

When these structures become compressed you may experience wrist/hand pain, decreased sensation or numbness/tingling into your fingers, weakness in your wrist and hand and even feel like your fingers are cold due to lack of blood flow.  There are several cause for carpal tunnel syndrome and it is important to get to the source of it so it can be properly treated.  The source of the problem can be in the neck, shoulder, elbow, forearm or wrist.  A thorough examination by a Physical Therapist is important to ensure that the issue does not return again.  So what do you do when you start to have wrist pain?  Go see your Local Physical Therapist! CTS will get worse if you do not address it early on so don’t put this on the back burner and ignore it. Your Local PT will do a thorough examination and get you on course for pain relief right away.  The typical course of treatment for CTS is soft tissue mobilization (to the average person this will feel like massage), hands on stretching, exercises and modalities such as ice, heat, ultrasound and NMES.  Your PT will also educate you on things you are probably doing on a daily basis that are creating your wrist pain and possibly making it worse.  They will give you tips to improve your work station and posture.  They will also give you tips for immediate pain management at home.  So why wait?! Don’t you want to feel better? Isn’t this nagging wrist pain been destroying your life long enough.  Are you not tired of taking pain medication every day to get relief? One hour out of your day for w few weeks will resolve your problem so pick up the phone and make an appointment with your Local Physical Therapist!  We want to help you Restore Your Function So You Can Restore Your Life.
